The Turtles were formed in Los Angeles in 1963 with six members (initial members) under the name THE CROSSFIRES. After that, they changed their name to THE TURTLES and made their debut again with "Sad Babe" (a cover of Dylan's song). From 1965 to 1970, they sent nearly 20 songs such as "Happy Together" and "Eleanor" to the national charts, and became a representative band that led the folk rock era along with The Byrds.

 

① appeared with folk rock aimed at The Byrds. It focuses on songs by Bob Dylan and P.F. Sloane, but Howard Keilan's originals shine just as well. #98 on the US album charts. There are 6 members at this time. In addition to three common members throughout the Turtles career: Howard Keiran, Mark Bollman and Al Nicol (guitar), Jim Tucker (rhythm guitar), Chuck Portes (bass) and Don Murray (drums). was. Produced by Bones Howe, it reached number 98 on the album chart.

 

② is an album that actively features the members' own works, while centering on the hits of the title two songs written by P.F Sloan. They are already breaking away from folk rock, and have a wide variety of songs. However, the B-side of the debut single and the re-recording of "Let Me Be", which was also included in the first album, give the impression that it's just a side dish, and the standard of the songs is by no means high. I couldn't say no, and I couldn't break into the album's hit charts. By the time this album was released, drummer Don Murray had stopped and Joel Larson was playing for a while. When Rhino Records re-released this album, they omitted "Let Me Be", which was also included in the first album, and replaced it with the single-only song "No You". Better" is included.

 

③ is a colorful masterpiece album including the US number 1 hit "Happy Together". It's a wonderful finish that wouldn't be strange for any song to be single cut. The album chart also reached #25 in the US. At this time, Jim Tucker (rhythm guitar) is retiring from the music world. Also, Joel Larson on drums has been changed to Johnny Barbata. Chuck Portes on bass also left the group, and from October 1966 Chip Douglas joined. However, after that, Chip Douglas was also pulled out of Mike Nesmith and turned to the Monkees' producer, so the bass was changed to Jim Pons.

 

④ is a concept album that is highly regarded as their best work. It is assumed that each song is performed by a different fictitious band, and the inner jacket features a unique band that looks like a costume contest. Although it included the big hits "You Showed Me" and "Elenore," the album itself peaked at number 128 in the US. Produced by Chip Douglas.

 

⑤ is actually the 6th album released in 1970 with rare songs such as songs that were shelved during the 2nd [YOU BABY] period.

 

⑥ is a sequel to the best compilation CD released in 1988, centering on the B-side songs released by Rhino in the United States. In 2002, the 2 CD [anthology] Rhino version was released and that role ended.

 

  In addition, between ④ and ⑤ above, Ray Davies of The Kinks was produced and his 5th [Turtle Soup] was released in October 1969. This is a "paper jacket specification" and the domestic edition <released by Airmail Recordings> was released on CD in 2010. Regarding the relationship between the Kinks and the Turtles (?), the liner notes written by Kenro Komatsuzaki are quite interesting.
