Throughout the years that have since passed, the collection and study of the first Greek stamps has exceeded all expectations. Greeks, English, French, Germans, Italians, Swiss, Belgians, Dutch and Americans, all formed magnificent collections and recorded the findings of their investigations on thousands of pages of scientific monographs and articles.
As has been fittingly said, the research on the basic observations of the differences of these stamps (the various ways of imprinting on the paper of the methods used to carry out the printing, the different colours and papers used from 1861 to 1882, errors, varieties ) continues to this very day. However, present-day scholars, armed with more modern tools, such as those of the Annales School of historiography, attempt to interpret their philatelic findings on other terms, successfully expanding their research efforts into fields such as the social, political, economic and postal history of the period when these stamps were issued.
Still, the lack of detailed Greek records has left its imprint as legacy which is both a curse and a blessing on the study of the large Hermes head stamps.
After so many years of research and study, Greece must be the only country in the worldwide philatelic community whose stamps cause such constructive discord amongst scholars over their classification. Therein lies the blessing and the beauty of the accompanying scientific research, which continues to imaginatively produce wondrous results.
In the Greek language the words collection, study and large head are of feminine gender. We all, therefore, love the same woman who unsparingly offers to each of us comfort and the joys of the warrior's rest, the spiritual satisfaction and the camaraderie with likeminded people, contributing in a unique manner to the protection, preservation and dissemination of our cultural heritage.
